Online Dating: Romantic Profiling, Part Two
It’s a sunny Sunday afternoon and I’m online profile-writing in a hip cafe, sipping a glass of rosé for inspiration. I’ve got the first few paragraphs done, but I now – according to Lauren’s* direction – need a section about what my preferences are.
Ostensibly this is just to give my potential suitors a clue about what I like to do. It’s sort of simplistic, but powerful at the same time. You know . . . you can get a pretty clear picture of someone who says they like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain.
As it happens, expressing predilections turns out to be harder than it looks, and the wine is tastier than it is thought-igniting.
Trying to express my love for traveling & sometimes living abroad, I come up with things that fit the poetic bill but fail other tests:
I prefer international to domestic – to the point and true, but it reads more “beer” than “flight.”
I prefer international over domestic travel – boring . . . and sounds too effete.
I prefer international flights to domestic beer
I like international men and domestic cheese.
I like my flights international . . . and my men domestic.
Dire. But at least that last one gives me a laugh. Maybe I can find a guy who will cook dinner and do the laundry before jetting me off to Italy?
Unfortunately, as any of my closest friends will tell you, it’s not actually true. I like my men pretty international, too.
My chuckling draws the attention of a chap sitting next to me at the cafe who, in a charming Danish accent, asks what I’m writing. I pause briefly, in hopes that some pithy lie will emerge from my lips. Instead, I am completely honest. I tell him that I am writing an online profile and quite comically failing.
It turns out to be a good conversation starter. We chat for a while. No extraordinary chemistry, but maybe it’s worth a shot? And as we exchange numbers, I can’t help but thinking . . . “I wonder if he cooks?”
Until next time,
