Online Dating: Launching My Profile

It’s time. The profile has been proofed, edited, revised, tweaked, prodded and poked. Lauren* has given me hints and ideas and blunt orders. (“You can’t say, “gentleman” there, Khristina. It sounds like you might be looking for a sugar daddy.”)

I’m on the phone with Lauren and some Man Magnet friends when she ceremoniously christens the page and launches it into the world.

There it is. Out and up there for suitors to see.

I don’t feel ready, but seriously, I’m never going to. Once the page goes live, I inhale nervously, say a small prayer, sit back and wait.

It doesn’t take long. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really. I leave my computer on when I go to sleep, the ping ping of incoming emails singing a steady lullaby.

24 hours after ‘launch’ I have 26 emails, 28 ‘winks,’ and 334 people have viewed my profile.

48 hours in, there are . . . 83 emails, 48 ‘winks,’ and 1156 pageviews.

By week’s end I have 250 emails and 3843 people have viewed my page.

I have absolutely no idea what to do with it all. But at the very least, I am utterly floored and flattered that 250 (250!!!) men have decided to reach out to say hello.

I knew that putting this much effort into planning and posting my profile was bound to make something of a difference, but still, I feel a little shocked.

All the more so when I actually start reading some of them:

That is amazingly articulated & profound. I wasn’t planning on a such a savory midnight dip into a “stranger’s” majestic domain, yet you indeed had me indulging in the swim of your creativity with that Random House Collegiate Dictionary of poetic linguistic form. You are truly the author of your destiny.

Hi there. Read through your profile, and I have to say that if I met someone who truly fit what you described “in your own words” I could die a happy man. Simply wonderful. Would love to hear from you, I can’t imagine those images coming to life! Have a great night,

Dear Ms. Dynamite,
Your eloquent and creative writing is quite refreshing on this site. I can tell you are well grounded and emotionally ready for a committed relationship. I feel we are looking for the same things in life….especially the ‘earth-shattering’ love. I hope you find my profile of mutual interest.
I will await your reply (patiently)

Not all 250 of them are like this of course, and the most beautiful responses don’t necessarily come from the men I am interested in meeting. But holy cow!

I really am completely overwhelmed by the number of responses. To the extent that I can barely begin plundering through them. But I have learned that chivalry is not dead and romance still burns bright in the hearts of men.

In fact, after reading the first responses, I’d guess that these guys have been dying for the right moment to express their romantic nature, and the right woman to express it to.

Now, of course, I have to actually respond to some of them. Thankfully, Lauren has agreed to help me out. More on that next time!

‘Til then,
